United responds to Lujan’s inquiry about re-checking baggage in Hawaii

United Airlines says there’s not much it can do about complaints about arrival procedures at the Honolulu airport. Senator Jesse Lujan wrote to the carrier, stating that requiring passengers who are transiting to the mainland United States to re-claim and re-check baggage was “unnecessary and discriminatory.”

United Corporate says its a federal and state requirement and directed Lujan to consult with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Hawaii agriculture authorities.

Lujan responded by saying he hopes United can come up with a temporary solution while he contacts USCBP and Hawaii state officials to try and come up with a permanent fix.
