SENATOR LUJAN ISSUES A STATEMENT ON THE PUBLIC HEARING FOR BILL NO.48-37(COR)

(Hagåtña, Guam) – A bill mandating the timely online posting of school inspection reports will be heard by the Committee on Human Resources, Hagåtña Revitalization, Regional Affairs, Public Libraries, Telecommunications, Technology and Federal and Foreign Affairs at 10:00 a.m. this morning in I Liheslaturan Guåhan’s Public Hearing Room (Guam Congress Building, Hagåtña). The public hearing agenda only includes Senator Jesse Lujan’s Bill No.48-37 (COR).

“I thank the Committee for choosing to hold a hearing on my legislation. Bill No.48-37 aims to increase transparency and accountability in our government by making school inspection reports available for viewing on the school’s website as well as GDOE’s website,” Lujan stated.

Bill No.48-37(COR) designates the Guam Department of Education Deputy Superintendent for Assessment and Accountability to execute the online reporting of all school inspections on a government website and the inspected school’s website, within thirty days of the inspection. The legislation also includes accessibility and accommodations, as well as certified instructors among the list of categories to be posted online for public viewing and information gathering.

“Oftentimes, parents are left in the dark, not knowing what happened or what to expect. We need to change this. The families of our public education system deserve to know the conditions of the schools their children are in,” Lujan stated.

The Republican Senator is inviting the public to attend the hearing and participate in providing testimony in support of this legislation.

“The education of our students is imperative to the success of Guam’s future. It is our duty as a governing body to ensure that the circumstances surrounding such education are acceptable,” Lujan concluded.
