35 delegate, senatorial, mayoral candidate packets filed with only 2 weeks to go before deadline

Former Del. Michael San Nicolas is so far the only potential delegate candidate to file his candidate packet with the Guam Election Commission, along with 34 others seeking to run for senator, mayor and vice mayor, barely two weeks before the deadline.

Among the 35 filers are seven incumbent senators seeking re-election, and seven incumbent mayors seeking to serve another term.

May 3 is the last day to file a candidate packet with GEC, which still has to review and certify the filings before anyone can be considered an official candidate for office during the primaries.

The primaries are set for Aug. 3, while the general election is Nov. 5.

For the delegate post, incumbent Del. James Moylan, a Republican, said he’s seeking re-election but has yet to file his candidate packet, along with other potential candidates to serve as Guam’s nonvoting delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, including Sen. Amanda Shelton, former federal official Ginger Cruz, Ken Leon-Guerrero, and David Lotz.

While 35 is so far a fraction of the 134 requested candidate packets that GEC approved for release, it is expected that many will be among last-minute filers for the elected positions.

Meanwhile, online surveys of potential 2024 candidates have started circulating online. The PDN has also started polling readers on their choice for a delegate candidate, which showed Cruz leading the pack, followed by Moylan and then San Nicolas, among others, as part of a series of questions. The same questions could be asked towards the primaries.
