Administration reviewing Lujan’s request to declare GDOE in a state of emergency

The administration is reviewing a senator’s request to declare a state of emergency for the Guam Department of Education.

Sen. Jesse Lujan sent Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero the letter Tuesday pointing out the longstanding facilities issues at the public schools.

Lujan stated, “GDOE is in need of immediate attention and immediate resources. We need action. Our children deserve nothing less.”

The governor is reviewing this request. Her office stated it remains unclear, however, what exactly Lujan is hoping an emergency declaration will accomplish.

Adelup said they have been in ongoing talks with GDOE leadership, adding the department has more than $100 million in funds to repair schools but its biggest challenge is with the procurement process. The governor’s office adding an emergency declaration will not address their procurement issues.
